Nick was a Restoration Engineer who specialized in D’ni into English translations. His sister-in-law had worked with Engberg at an architectural firm in Portland, and Nick met him while visiting one day. When the DRC needed more translators, Engberg remembered Nick and the rest is history.

For his first job, Nick was assigned as an assistant to Douglas Sharper in October of 1998, replacing Sam Reynolds, who Sharper just called Sam. Reynolds was actually working for Dr. Watson, who had loaned him to Sharper between February and April of 1998. Reynolds' known work include the King Ri'neref and Asemlef notebooks.

Sharper didn't like the speed at which Sam worked, which was due to his having many other jobs that were considered higher priority. When Sam became too busy with the other projects to help Sharper anymore, the DRC decided to assign the newly trained Nick White to him, and Nick began translating documents found in the upstairs office in Teledahn. Sharper liked him immediately, and was impressed by how quickly Nick worked.

In January of 1999, Sharper convinced Nick to translate some sensitive D'ni papers without telling the DRC. By this time, Nick had been in trouble with Kodama and Engberg, possibly because of his tendency to tell explorers things they didn't want revealed. He was beginning to resent the DRC because of the gag orders they were issuing to him, and it wasn't difficult for Sharper to recruit him to his side of the conflict. In that same month, Nick finished translating the story of Guild Captain Ventus and his role in ruining Teledahn.

In February of 2000, Nick translated several of the documents that Sharper was keeping hidden from the DRC. From it, Sharper learned about the last owner of Teledahn, a man named Manesmo, and about the slave trade he was conducting while using spore bread production as a cover. By May of the same year, they figured out that the slaves were being sent to an Age called Rebek. In October, Nick learned that the Guild of Maintainers were investigating Teledahn, although nothing was discovered before the Fall of D'ni put an end to Manesmo, the slave trade, and the Maintainers.

When the DRC returned to D'ni in 2006, Nick White also returned; however, he took time off for frequent trips to the surface and wasn't around as much as he had been before. In December, 2006, Nick White was working on two Ages with Dr. Kodama, one of which is still unnamed, although there still seemed to be hostility between them.

On May 3rd, 2007, Nick’s employment with the DRC was terminated. The reasons given for this action included poor job performance, fraternization with explorers, and leaking confidential DRC information in violation of the terms of his probation for previous violations of DRC policy. After his termination, Nick continued to appear in the Cavern, sharing rumors he heard from other Restoration Engineers, many of whom still remained his friends. He was invited by Douglas Sharper on his expeditions into Negilahn, and along with an explorer named Rils was present when Sharper discovered that the animals there were being slaughtered by unknown predators.

Nick also went with Sharper when he set up a hunting blind to try to catch the predators in action in May of 1007, but left to offer assistance to the DRC rescue efforts when Willow Engberg and Rosette Taylor were caught in a structural collapse in Tokotah II. Thus, he was not present when Sharper found out that a group of Bahro were responsible for the decimation of the Negilahn animals.

Nick returned to the surface when the cavern was closed for the second time, and has not been seen since then.

One of the side projects Nick worked on was translating stories about the D'ni kings that he called folk tales. The folk tales were stories about events in the reigns of several kings, rather than the official histories being translated by other Restoration Engineers for the Hall of Kings. He's known to have translated at least four of them:

  • King Kedri's Story
  • King Me'emen's Story
  • King Me'erta's Story
  • King Shomat's Story
